WINONA LAKE — The town of Winona Lake is making progress in establishing four charging stations for electric vehicles.
The charging stations will be part of a new parking lot north of the existing town hall parking lot along Fort Wayne Street that will add to the existing parking area.
Earlier this week, the town council agreed to work with MACOG (Michiana Area Council of Governments) to design and construct the charging stations in the parking lot which will include about 36 parking spaces.
Town manager Craig Allebach said they looked at a location in the Village but it didn’t work out for several reasons.
The new lot will be just north of the town park.
“Kind of a win-win. They’re close enough to The Village that they can charge there and go to restaurants or go shopping. And of course, they’re close enough to the park,” Allegach said.
Cost of installing the charging stations is expected to be $45,0000 to $60,000 and the town will pick up 20 percent of that, according to the arrangement.
The parking lot and charging stations should be ready near the end of the year, he said.
While plans for charging stations are coming together, the town learned last year that efforts to acquire three EV police cars did not work out.
“We were obviously disappointed. We figured we would at least get one because we had applied for three,” Allebach said.
He said it was unclear why the town application was rejected.
